ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT ADEMRUIMTE
In 2020 Julie de Ruijter was Artist in Residence at Ademruimte during a period of one year. Stichting Ademruimte is an innovative art platform and place for contemplation through interactive biofeedback art.
Waaierwereld
In collaboration with Stichting Ademruimte, Julie developed a ritualistic space and ritual that interacts with the breath. For this interactive ‘Waaierwereld’ (Fan World), innovative biofeedback technology is used, which originates in healthcare. Waaierwereld is an interactive artwork and space which is designed to respond to the breath. The opening and closing of the fan mirrors the inhale and exhale. This turns the space around you into moving fans by connecting to your breathing rhythm and state of being.
Woven Rhythms & Totem
Two other projects that took root during this residency period are Woven Rhythms and Totem. Together with Generative artist Beer van Geer Julie explored how to translate her experimental techniques and ink drawings into generatively produced textile prints, translating digitally recorded heart rate data. The result of this research has led to a new technique in which various patterns in the heartbeat are translated into generated textile prints. Due to the use of sensor technology it is possible to generate very varied prints by means of a heart rate recording. Totem is currently on show at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam as part of the exhibition Spiritual Urgency.
We are very grateful for the financial support we have received from the Prins Bernhard Culture Fund and the Gemeente den Haag, to realise this project.
